New CSU Identity Does Nothing for SJ Students, Alumni
The CSU has a great new identity package for the Chancellor's office, but students and alumni from the original and oldest California State (1862) institution of higher learning are still prohibited from effectively identifying and marketing themselves as CSU graduates.
Is this fair or right, and why don't the CSU Trustees or the Chancellor's office help students and alumni in San Jose secure their full rights as CSU students/alumni?
Also, why does the CSU use the 1857 year of establishment of the City of San Francisco Minn's Normal School, instead of the May 2, 1862, date the California Legislature established the California State Normal School, which became the CSU? This is a clear violation of both the letter and spirit the 1862 Legislation.

Spartan Daily Reinforces "San Jose State" Historical Revisionism

While the above-linked story in the Spartan Daily about the 1906 earthquake was interesting, once again the Spartan Daily got it's history wrong.
The image it used was of the (California) State Normal School (not San Jose State) building. The California State Normal School existed from 1862 until 1887, at which time the California Legislature renamed it the "State Normal School" at San Jose. The University's history website was recently amended to reflect this fact.

When today's Tower Hall was built the school's official name was the STATE NORMAL SCHOOL at San Jose. The school retained that name until 1921. The so-called "San Jose State Normal School" never existed.
It's a shame the University Special Collections is giving the Spartan Daily daily inaccurate and misleading information about the school's identity during an important part of its history.

SJSU: Apathy State University
Few cast ballots in A.S. - News
As the above story from the Spartan Daily indicates, only 469 San Jose State (SJSU) students out of 30,000 bothered to cast votes in the recent race for Associated Students student government positions, despite the fact that A.S. controls $6 million in student fees.
Several articles in the Spartan Daily recently have highlighted the rampant apathy among SJSU students. It seems that not only do most SJSU students not care about their student government, they don't even care about their school. In fact, many SJSU students go beyond apathy to outright antipathy, as evidenced by posts by SJSU students on Myspace.com and elsewhere under titles like "I Hate This School".
Perhaps SJSU should be renamed "Apathy State University" in honor of the majority of students' attitudes toward the school.
Groups like the CSU Spartans ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CSU_Spartans ) are trying to combat SJSU apathy and academic and athletic mediocrity by restoring the school's valuable, prestigous and inspiring identity as the oldest and original California State University. This, they believe, will not only increase the name recognition and value of their degrees, but also help attract better, more committed residential students who will actually care about the school and help restore it to greatness.

The real way to improve SJSU is to recognize and promote its prestigious identity as the oldest CSU campus, instead of suppressing this, as is currently done by "San Jose State".
Students should also have the freedom to identify with, and market themselves as, California State University, San Jose, graduates, if they choose. Others, who prefer the more provinicial San Jose State identity, can continue to identify with that more community-college oriented identity.
Restoring a strong, geographically expansive and prestigious CSU (1862) identity in San Jose will also enable to the school to attract a more geographically diverse student body, including more students who live on or near campus, and continue to support the school after they graduate. This will eventually mean more money for the school through alumni contributions.

Merc News to SJSU: Study Wisconsin-Milwaukee
In a March 11 column, Mercury News sports columnist Bud Geracie had this to say about SJSU Spartan athletics:
"San Jose State should study Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a large downtown commuter school that has overcome years of athletic failure and widespread apathy to become a regular at the NCAA basketball tournament."
It seems like everyone knows "San Jose State" needs a major image and identity overhaul except the small number of SJSU alumni who support the school's current geographically restrictive identity and tradition of failure in intercollegiate athletics.

Spartan basketball at San Jose's California State University (CSU) campus has gone "STATE" this year, with great new jerseys featuring that powerful brand, commonly associated with the oldest "State University" school in a state. San Jose's CSU has often been referred to simply as "STATE" throughout its history. And the Spartans have won most of the home games they've played with these jerseys on.So please give Coach Nessman or anyone else at Spartan athletics a quick call or email, and tell them to expand the use of this powerful brand for Spartan athletics. UCLA Bruin Suggests "Cal State Spartans"
A UCLA Bruin recently posted a suggestion on the http://www.spartanthunder.com message board suggesting that San Jose, as the original and oldest CSU campus, market its sports teams as the "Cal State Spartans". Calling it a "no-brainer". Alumni from other schools like Berkeley, CSU Fullerton and Sonoma State have also expressed strong support for this.
The CSU Spartans have been advocating exactly that for over 2 years now, but have met resistance from the anti-California alumni who still dominate "San Jose State".

Why is the Spartan Squad promoting obscure schools like UOP as Spartan Rivals on the squad's A.S. website? UOP doesn't even have a freakin' football team!
Spartan football's biggest rival should be UC-Berkeley, a school the California State Normal School (now "SJSU") has played frequently since the 1800s. See: http://www.gostate.org Our other rivalries should be Stanford and other major state universities like Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon State, Washington State, etc.Come on, Spartan Squad, stop trying to promote our University as a small time D1AA city college.
