Spartan basketball at San Jose's California State University (CSU) campus has gone "STATE" this year, with great new jerseys featuring that powerful brand, commonly associated with the oldest "State University" school in a state. San Jose's CSU has often been referred to simply as "STATE" throughout its history. And the Spartans have won most of the home games they've played with these jerseys on.
So please give Coach Nessman or anyone else at Spartan athletics a quick call or email, and tell them to expand the use of this powerful brand for Spartan athletics. They'll be happy to hear from you!

UCLA Bruin Suggests "Cal State Spartans"
A UCLA Bruin recently posted a suggestion on the http://www.spartanthunder.com message board suggesting that San Jose, as the original and oldest CSU campus, market its sports teams as the "Cal State Spartans". Calling it a "no-brainer". Alumni from other schools like Berkeley, CSU Fullerton and Sonoma State have also expressed strong support for this.
The CSU Spartans have been advocating exactly that for over 2 years now, but have met resistance from the anti-California alumni who still dominate "San Jose State".
For more info on the struggle to restore the original "California State" see California State University, San Jose

CSU Campus Village
This is a picture of the new $240 million Campus Village built by the California State University Trustees in San Jose. Many CSU students and alumni in San Jose believe its proper name should be and is the "CSU Campus Village". The CSU Spartans support the development of a balanced state-city identity at the California State University campus in San Jose. To learn more, please see California State University, San Jose

Spartan Squad Says UOP is a Spartan Rival?
csu_spartans:
Why is the Spartan Squad promoting obscure schools like UOP as Spartan Rivals on the squad's A.S. website? UOP doesn't even have a freakin' football team!
Spartan football's biggest rival should be UC-Berkeley, a school the California State Normal School (now "SJSU") has played frequently since the 1800s. See: http://www.gostate.org Our other rivalries should be Stanford and other major state universities like Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon State, Washington State, etc.Come on, Spartan Squad, stop trying to promote our University as a small time D1AA city college. We are the oldest CSU, founded as California State by the California Legislature in 1862. Stop trying to make us a small-time city college.

"San Jose State" Identity Hurts CSU, California
There is a new home page article at http://www.gostate.org that examines the recent changes in the CSU system and how the "San Jose State" identity imposed on the oldest California State University campus, located in that city, has hurt not only that school's students and grads, but the entire CSU and State of California.

CSU East Bay & CSU 1862 (San Jose)
FAQs: Q and A About the Name Change
The name was changed "help increase regional awareness and visibility of the university, expand fundraising capabilities, enhance the relationship with the East Bay communities, and recruit students, especially first-time freshmen."
Now CSUEB, founded in 1959, has both a state and a regional identity, while the oldest CSU, founded in 1862 and located in San Jose, is dependent on its geographically restrictive "San Jose State" identity.
Where does this leave "San Jose State," a school that was founded as the California State Normal School (1862-1921), and was named the California State University, San Jose from 1972-1974, but is now almost entirely dependent on the sprawling and disconnected City of San Jose for its identity? Is maintaining an identity that is so dependent on one city good for the oldest California State University, its students and graduates?
For information on a plan to expand San Jose's geographic appeal, prestige and stature by capitalizing on its status as the oldest California State University, please see http://www.gostate.org/CSU_Restoration_Program_San_Jose.htm .

CSULB Online 49er: volLIVno44: The Daily Forty-Niner: history in the making
Interesting article about the Long Beach State's successful movment to give the school a CSU identity (in addition to "
Long Beach State"): CSULB Online 49er: volLIVno44: The Daily Forty-Niner: history in the making
Very similar reasoning to San Jose's current CSU restoration movement. See http://www.gostate.org
