CSU East Bay & CSU 1862 (San Jose)

FAQs: Q and A About the Name Change

The name was changed "help increase regional awareness and visibility of the university, expand fundraising capabilities, enhance the relationship with the East Bay communities, and recruit students, especially first-time freshmen."

Now CSUEB, founded in 1959, has both a state and a regional identity, while the oldest CSU, founded in 1862 and located in San Jose, is dependent on its geographically restrictive "San Jose State" identity.

Where does this leave "San Jose State," a school that was founded as the California State Normal School (1862-1921), and was named the California State University, San Jose from 1972-1974, but is now almost entirely dependent on the sprawling and disconnected City of San Jose for its identity? Is maintaining an identity that is so dependent on one city good for the oldest California State University, its students and graduates?

For information on a plan to expand San Jose's geographic appeal, prestige and stature by capitalizing on its status as the oldest California State University, please see http://www.gostate.org/CSU_Restoration_Program_San_Jose.htm .

Interesting article about the Long Beach State's successful movment to give the school a CSU identity (in addition to "
Long Beach State"): CSULB Online 49er: volLIVno44: The Daily Forty-Niner: history in the making

Very similar reasoning to San Jose's current CSU restoration movement. See http://www.gostate.org
